The unit
Intensive care and dialysis, on one site, under one team.
The SkyHigh Medical Dialysis and ICU Centre sits within Mainland Hospital, Yaba. It is part of SkyHigh Medical Centre, and it takes both our own patients and referrals from hospitals across Lagos.
Why the two sit together
A critically ill patient who needs dialysis should not have to move.
Acute kidney injury is one of the most common complications of critical illness. Sepsis causes it, major surgery causes it, severe obstetric haemorrhage causes it, and so does the dehydration that accompanies almost every serious illness in this climate.
In many Nigerian hospitals a critically ill patient who develops kidney failure has to be transferred to reach a dialysis machine, which means moving a person on vasopressors and possibly a ventilator across a city that does not move quickly. Every one of those journeys carries risk.
Placing intensive care and haemodialysis in the same unit removes that journey entirely. It also means the same team holds the whole clinical picture rather than handing it between two sets of clinicians who have never spoken.

Capacity
The unit runs continuous cardiac, respiratory and haemodynamic monitoring at every bed, mechanical ventilation, infusion pump support for vasoactive drugs, and haemodialysis stations in the same suite. For current bed and chair availability, call the unit. It changes hour by hour and we will tell you straight.
The critical care team
The unit is staffed around the clock by critical care nurses at a ratio far higher than any general ward, with medical cover on site and specialist input from nephrology and anaesthesia. Clinical responsibility across SkyHigh sits with the team below.

The unit is at 1 Mainland Hospital Road, Yaba, Lagos 100001, inside the Mainland Hospital complex. Ambulances should come to the main gate and ask for the SkyHigh Dialysis and ICU Centre, and calling ahead means someone will be waiting rather than assessing from scratch.
Herbert Macaulay Way runs directly into Yaba from the mainland. Allow considerable extra time in the morning and evening peaks, and call ahead so we know when to expect a transfer.
Next step
If you need a bed tonight, call. We will tell you straight away.
The unit is staffed at every hour. Referring clinicians should call before transferring a patient so availability can be confirmed and the team can be ready on arrival.
